YMA (2001)

for string quartet and tape

was composed at Florida International University (Miami) in spring 2001. The title is the first name of Yma Sumac, a Peruvian soprano, whose fascinating imitation of the rain forest birds stimulated my interest in exploring natural sonic environments. In this particular work, it was the humpback whale communication systems. Rather than seeking cadential points, the composition emerges and disappears in front of the listener like a giant aural sculpture.
